Extended History

Lloyd has no canon past or childhood for any of the time from when was born up until his attendance in college, which leaves me to make it up.

Parents

Lloyd's father died when he was very young. It didn't really have an emotional impact on him, and even to this day he seems indifferent to talk of his father's death. His father was killed in battle, as he was part of the Britannian military.

Lloyd's mother was basically your typical nobility, and although she wasn't exactly an uncaring person, she really didn't know how to deal with her child and usually ended up leaving him to his own devices. She fell ill when Lloyd was in his mid-teens and died before he entered college. He didn't have much of a reaction to her death, probably because he, logically, had expected it. It did effect him on a more subconscious level, as well as did the death of his father - the deaths of his parents (later supplemented by his work in the military) are what instilled in him the sentiment of human fragility.

Past

Lloyd was very logic-minded for a child, which isolated from the other children he was around once he entered private schooling. His logic-mindedness often led him to make observations that either confused or offended his young peers, and because he made no effort to reach out or make friends he had very little positive interaction with others his age, nor with adults, because they often didn't now how to handle his behavior. His trouble empathizing only furthered his distance from other people.

As Lloyd got older, he started to find humor in the things that he observed, and since he had such a difficult time communicating with people they usually assumed that they were being mocked, even if he meant no harm by it. This served to drive him even further away from the desire for human contact. Once he reached adulthood, he began to acquire the ability to better check the things he said and the way that he acted, but because of the philosophies he had picked up along the way (such as the belief that people are generally nothing more than parts, and are too fragile to bother caring about - that the connections between people themselves were too fragile to bother forming) made it so that he put little effort in getting along better with other people.

Lloyd was drawn to science because of his logic-mindedness. He found a certain stability and university in it that human connections didn't offer, and because of that, perused a scientific career. He chose to focus on military weapons simply because it seemed the most practical use of his prowess (as machines are generally applied to a) making life more convenient b) medical science or c) weaponry ). He wasn't particularly interested in becoming a scientist only to make life easier for other people, or to save lives that were, as he saw, eventually going to die anyway. Though, truthfully, the most basic reason for his choice was that it was simply the easiest way to distance himself even further from other people.

Cecile served to break him from this distance in a way, because she became a human connection that he actually invested in and didn't immediately, or eventually, push away. She also served to enable his ways, however, because she was also a scientist and understood and followed his rule of 'giving up your soul' to become a scientist.

In the end, Suzaku was the one to completely tear him from his ways (and tear is a fitting word to use, because it wasn't an easy transition). As much as he tried to distance himself from the the boy, he ended up becoming emotionally attached, as well as concerned for his well-being. His feelings grew with no way for him to check them because he denied their existence so thoroughly. He denied it to himself up until the end, despite the futility of it. It wasn't until he was whisked from his world that he was forced into a position in which he had to acknowledge it.

Even though he now has the stability and ability to acknowledge his feelings, he still doesn't care to get close to people. Even though he's been able to let a few people in and benefit and be happy because of it, it's still difficult for him to be close to someone and hold such a substantial view of human weakness.

Roleplay History

Lloyd has been played several places, including Bad Touch Farms, Village of Sheol, Resolutionless, Houseless, Nam Cobanda, The Love Hotel, and Infinity Dressing Room.

This is only important because he still has the memories of all of these places, including the memories he has from when he was first played over AIM chats. Because he's had about six months of characer development since he was taken from the series itself, there are differences in the way I play him than if I were to have taken him straight from the show.

The biggest and most noteworthy change is that he's come to the point where he no longer denies that he cares for and has feelings for Suzaku Kururugi. He also has a bit of a grudge toward Lelouch Lamperouge due to an event that happened in Sheol. This particular event broke what little respect he had for the boy, and he's become largely untrusting of him and any of his incarnations.

Despite what character development he's gained, however, he's still quite abhorrent to get close to people, so it can be expected it won't act too much differently towards those he doesn't know.

I may expand on this area later.

Personality

(Taken straight from his profile, so there will be some discrepancies due to character development).

Lloyd is an overly cheerful and somewhat childish person, which contrasts his saying that he is broken, and that he's sacrificed his soul for science; refusing to form social bonds in order to save himself the pain of losing people in the face of his work in the military. At least part of the reason why is obvious - he sends people to the front lines in dangerous machines and that they come back alive is always an "if", so it's much easier and more convenient to simply perceive them (and generally, all people) as objects; replaceable parts to the machines that they pilot and nothing more.

Despite all of this, he seems to have formed a(n) (unwitting) connection of sorts with Suzaku, who pilots the prototype Lancelot (citing his reaction to Suzaku stealing the Lancelot in episodes 24-25, where, despite his denial of caring for Suzaku's well-being, he saved his life). Though he denies this to other people [cecile] and perhaps himself, as well, he does treat Suzaku with kindness and acceptance at times and generally tends to do what he tells him to (such as doing nice things for Millay at his prompting). He's unable to accept (or at least admit) that he cares for Suzaku's well-being at the end of the first season, but beyond that it's difficult to figure what exactly his thinking is. Because the second season focuses on him much less, it's difficult to tell whether his thinking has changed any. The only indication that it may have is his reaction to Nina equipping the Lancelot with F.L.E.I.J.A and asking Suzaku to fire it: He turns to her, unhappily, telling her that the contradiction she's making will eventually get both her and Suzaku killed. Whereas in season one, near the beginning of the season, he cheerfully asks Suzaku why he is in the military if he wants to save lives, and summarily tells him that the contradiction will kill him when he answers that he's "In the military to save lives."

His relationship with Cecile is also an interesting one (and probably the only other notable one that gets any amount of attention). She seems to be the only person he's allowed himself to become "close" to (though it seems he may try his best not to act this way, or even not realize it, even if they are familiar with each other). This may be because they are "the same" - Cecile is also a scientist, and judging by what Lloyd said to Nina about how the only way to survive as a scientist is to sacrifice your heart, it isn't a stretch to say that she also believes in this philosophy. It seems likely that their relationship, at least partially, would be based upon this understanding of similarity between the them. Either way, Lloyd seems to trust Cecile and regard her as a confidant and a friend.

Lloyd has a difficult time dealing with people socially. This is a possible aspect of what makes him broken - maybe even the cause for his saying it, though the exact reason why will never be known as it is never clearly stated. It could be because of something in his past that affected, or simply that he's always just been this way, but he has little empathy for people, which causes him to be extremely tactless most of the time. While at least a part of this is his refusal to connect with others in order to spare himself, it isn't so much that he won't empathize, but rather that he's unable to do so properly. This is also augmented by his assumingly sheltered lifestyle - being both of nobility and a genius, Britannia has every reason to make sure that nothing untoward happens to him, so he rarely, if ever, is greeted with backlash for the way that he treats people - even if they're the Emperor himself. Cecile is the only one who ever punishes him for his "rude" actions, though it seems to have little effect on the way that he acts in the long run, which augments the possibility of his being unable to control it.

This inability to communicate tactfully is the main reason that he so often gets himself into trouble when pulled out of the protective atmosphere he is so used to (he stays inside the trailer for most of the series, only leaving for special occasions and a few other instances). He is often unable to communicate with people, and in a place where his status means nothing, pissing people off means getting hurt at least half of the time. This is one of the aspects of his character that makes him difficult to play without Suzaku or Cecile around, for he has a tendency to get himself into trouble and is unable to defend himself.

Lloyd, too, is somewhat of a coward. He owes this to a high survival instinct despite his lack of common sense, and whenever he does get into a dangerous situation, his responses tend to be largely fear-driven.

He loves pudding (or, flan, as it's known here) and hates doing boring or unnecessary things and has no shame about overreacting about having to do them (he had a positive reaction to an attack by the Black Knights because it got him out of paper work on one occasion).

Lloyd also has no problems with doing questionable things to get what he wants (for instance, his engagement to Millay was only so that he could get rights to the Ganymede, which is property of the Ashford family) and being selfish, to an extent. He isn't really an amoral person, however - he doesn't seem to discriminate in the way that Britannians are are largely known for (though this could also be attributed to his logic-based way of thinking), and there are also hints that he doesn't agree with the the way the empire is run (such as his mocking the Emperor).

All in all, it seems, though he does have some concern for other people in general, he tends to follow the most logical branch of thinking - looking out for oneself first and foremost. Of course, his emotions will always be his weak point; I don't think that it would be possible for him to sacrifice someone who he actually cared about to spare his own well-being.
